Photovoltaic Effect in Solar Cells: A solar cell is essentially a p-n
junction diode which generates an electromotive force when solar radiation falls on it.
The generation of emf occurs via three sequential processes: (i) generation of
electron-hole pairs due to light absorption near the junction, (ii) separation of
electrons and holes due to the electric field of the depletion region, and (iii)
collection of electrons at the n-side and holes at the p-side. Silicon and GaAs are
preferred materials due to their suitable optical band gap energies (~1.1 to 1.5 eV).
(i)
Solar cells are fabricated
from semiconductor materials having an optimal band gap of:
[1]
(a) 0.2
to 0.5 eV
(b) 1.1
to 1.5 eV
(c) 3.0
to 4.5 eV
(d) >
6.0 eV
(ii)
During illumination of a
solar cell, electrons are driven and collected towards the:
[1]
(a) p-side contact
(b) n-side contact
(c) Both sides equally
(d) Middle barrier
(iii)
Why is GaAs preferred over
Silicon for space solar cell arrays despite its higher production
cost?
